Grains | Ag Week 2023 Digital Learning Kit

Learn about InterGrain and its focus on producing new varieties of wheat, barley, and oats with higher yields. The innovative development of a new wheat variety called Firefly currently produces a 10% yield improvement on a unit of land. This variety is excellent at manufacturing udon noodle-style products.

In the Primary resources, hear about how DNA sequencing of specific wheat lines before growing in the paddock can assist in selecting specific noodle quality traits to meet the specialised Japanese market. Also, hear how Japanese experts visit Australia and work with scientists to taste the noodles and inform research to improve productivity.

In the Secondary resource, learn how the Firefly variety requires a lower application of artificial fertiliser throughout the growth cycle, leading to improved environmental sustainability.

It is an exciting time to be involved in the industry as new technologies will drive future advancements in science, leading to improved quality and quantity of a product that meets market and consumer requirements on a global scale.
