The ocean is a fascinating and mysterious place, and as people continue to enjoy its beauty and activities, it’s essential to understand the potential dangers that exist in this vast world. The increase in human-shark interactions along the coast of New South Wales in 2015 prompted the NSW Government to take action. Over the next five years, a comprehensive suite of shark mitigation technologies was trialled, including drones, SMART drumlines, and shark listening stations. Scientists tagged over 500 sharks to gather crucial data about their movements, which helped inform future shark safety measures and make informed decisions about beach safety.
NSW DPI’s Shark Management Strategy (SMS) workbooks were developed to help teachers bring the exciting world of shark research and technology into the classroom. These workbooks are designed to align with the NSW syllabus and offer a hands-on approach to learning about the importance of shark management and the science behind it. The workbooks are filled with engaging activities, videos, and interactive elements that bring the SMS to life and give students a deeper understanding of the subject.
The workbooks are designed to be flexible, so teachers can choose the version that best fits the needs of their students. Whether your students are at the primary, secondary, or senior level, the SMS workbooks are an excellent resource to help them understand the importance of shark management and the role that science and technology play in this field. With the support of these workbooks, teachers can inspire their students to learn about the ocean and the creatures that live within it, and encourage them to make informed decisions about their interactions with the ocean. So, if you’re looking for an exciting and educational lesson plan, look no further than the NSW DPI’s Shark Management Strategy workbooks!
