Investigate: Bees | NSW DPI

The Investigate Bees Science and Technology teacher resource is a unique and exciting opportunity for students to delve into the world of bees and their critical role in our environment and food production. Developed by the NSW Department of Primary Industries, this lesson plan aims to inspire a love for science, technology and agriculture in young learners and to encourage the teaching of these subjects in schools.

Bees are facing numerous challenges, including biosecurity threats from diseases, pests and introduced bee species that could harm our native bees and insects or honey bees. This unit of work allows students to design and carry out their own investigation, and create a portfolio of work that meets outcomes from the NSW Science and Technology, English, and Geography syllabuses.

With the recent buzz about the plight of bees, students will have a basic understanding of their significance. However, this unit will take their knowledge to the next level and empower them to take action to support bees, including honey bees and Australian native bees. They will learn which insects are currently visiting their gardens and what they can do to help. By supporting bees, they will be supporting the important ecosystem and production services they provide.

In this exciting unit of work, students will have the opportunity to make a real impact and support the future of bees. They will gain a deeper understanding of the world of bees, and the critical role they play in maintaining a healthy environment and food production. So, let’s get investigating and help support the buzzing bees in our world!
